Wireless Headsets – What To look For In A Wireless Headset
The wonderful world of wireless headsets would not have been possible just a few short years ago. Early models back then were very poor in sound quality and did not have anywhere near the range that today’s modern wireless headsets have. Additionally, the cost for such headsets a decade ago could be a little high.
Today there are plenty of good quality wireless headsets out there that also don’t cost an arm or leg to purchase. Happily, even some of the more inexpensive models deliver more than adequate sound quality without breaking the bank to get it. And while it’s certainly the case that expensive headsets deliver greater quality ones still won’t break the bank to get a pair of these.
As to how wireless headsets work, there are two different methods for delivering audio output to a headset receiver input. In the first, radio frequency is the prime method of delivering and receiving audio output. Also known as “RF, ” these headsets will pick up the signal from a radio type transmitter connected to the television or stereo.
The downside to these sorts of wireless headsets is that they can quite often burn through a set of alkaline batteries within a very few days. That’s why it’s a good idea to maybe invest in a couple of sets of rechargeable batteries rather than constantly having to swap out used up alkaline power cells. This isn’t really a big deal, however, to many audio enthusiasts.
In one type of wireless headsets, infrared is used to beam a signal from the audio output unit to the wireless headsets. If there’s a downside to this system, it’s that infrared depends upon line of sight. In other words, if a person wearing these headsets steps out of the path of the beam running from the audio output to the headset the signal is quickly lost.
Ultimately, it’s more personal preference that drives selection in wireless headsets rather than anything else. Keep in mind that radio frequency type headsets are just a bit bulkier and weigh just a bit more than standard infrared type headsets, though such a difference is minute and hardly ever will be noticed by all but the most hard-core audio nut. Remember; costlier headsets tend to deliver better sound quality.
As usual, the Internet can be a great source of information when it comes to something like wireless headsets. There are any number of brands and models out there and much of the fun in learning about them is doing all that window shopping online for them. So take a few minutes to learn the difference between really good units and which ones are really poor.
