The first step to restoring your cherished photos is to create a digital image of them so you can then edit them using your computer. Converting them to a digital image is as easy as scanning them into your computer. Once you have scanned your photo you can then begin the photo editing process.

After you have opened Adobe Elements you can go to file and open to retrieve the newly digitized photograph. I actually recommend you create a copy, by clicking on file and save as then renaming the photograph, so that you have a backup image on the off chance that you make a mistake. Now you can begin to edit them using a few of the tools available in Elements.

Now restoring your photos when using Adobe Elements is quite simple and it does not need any skilled training, all the tools in the elements software are very simple and easy to use. The most common tools you will use when restoring photos will be the smudge, blur and sharpen tool, these are the tools you definitely will need to get to grips with.

I am going to give you a breakdown of each of the tools and how you can use them to restore your photographs. The smudge tool is helpful when you want to eliminate any scratches that are on the original photo. You can also use the smudge tool to remove any object in the background you wish to eliminate as well as correct photos that were not properly focused.

The next tool is the blur tool. This tool will allow you to add some tone to photos so they can appear darker than they originally did. This tool is very effective when you are working with photos that have deteriorated due to long periods of exposure to sunlight. So you will be able to restore the colour in your photos so it looks bright and attractive again.

The sharpen tool is the last, most commonly used tool in photo restoration. If any parts of the photo are blurred, whether it is in the original photo or from scanning it in, this tool will fix those bits.

The two predominant tools provided by Adobe to fix your photograph are the measure tool and the crop tool. The measure tool is used to set a definite level of the picture and straighten it. It can be easily operated by selecting the measure tool from the menu and clicking on one horizon of the document / picture and dragging it to the other end of the document. Doing this would set the level of the document. With this tool, apart from a horizon, you could even fix an edgy shelf or a four sided roof line to a perfect horizontal level. Now, click the rotate canvas option to rotate the image and fix it on the canvas. The canvas will expand in accordance with the size of the picture. Then, use crop tool to cut the extra unwanted edges.

Those opting for the crop tool have the advantage of prompt straightening as this tool offers both the cropping and straightening options at one time. For operating the crop tool, select the crop tool and drag a crop marquee. Position the horizontal edge on the horizontal line to set the level of the image. Again, it could be roof line or an edgy shelf instead of a horizon which needs to be fixed in a perfect horizontal position. Now drag the marquee so that its edge merges with the horizon line. This is done to align the edge to a horizontal position.

After one edge is fixed, repeat the same to align the rest of the edges. However, note that if you want to fix the vertical lines on your image, then, do not align them with vertical borders. You can correct them by using ?perspective? option available in the option bar. By selecting the perspective option, you can correct the vertical lines by fixing the corners of the boundary meant to be cropped to the right perspective. Make sure to keep all the corners in the assigned document.

While the perspective element is not immediately available with Photoshop Elements it can be activated by converting the chosen background into a layer by double clicking on the background. With the rise in the popularity of digital cameras also comes the increased amount of tilted and crooked photos. They usually occur when the photographer clicks the shutter while keeping the camera straight and looking at the back screen. This has the tendency to distort the photo by making it disproportionate. With these tips you no longer need to take 4-5 of the same shots of the same subject. Repetition not only wastes your camera’s battery but the memory as well. Once you are done with the job of clicking a photograph, your job of photo editing begins. And, the very first step is to choose a new layer from the options in the menu. Remember that whenever you are making editions and deletions in your original photograph, always do it in a new layer as this makes your editing job easier. Now comes the turn of enhancing the lively appeal of the picture by accentuating its color scheme. This can be done by selecting the brush tool from the menu and clicking on the desired brush element. Basically this tool has three components to opt from, paint brush, spray paint and airbrush. Select the one that would best accentuate the appeal of your picture.

After choosing the brush you will also want to decide on which stroke and brush size you want to use. A quick hint: once you choose the brush tool from the menu press your right bracket key on your keyboard to increase its size and the left bracket key to decrease its size. You can skip this step by simply selecting the sample size option to maintain the consistent size of the brush. Now you want to decide how dark you want to your brush strokes to be.

This can be done by choosing the opacity tool which gives you the freedom of increasing and decreasing the darkness to improve the clarity of the picture. The opacity tool has a sliding option wherein you can increase or decrease the color intensity of your paint brush from 0% to 100%. Adobe gives you the provision of using varied color schemes till you find the best one. This can be done by experimenting with your colors in different layers and keep deleting them in case you are not satisfied.

Once you have mastered Photoshop Elements you may want to move to the professional version called Photoshop CS4. CS4 is more difficult to learn but comes packed with more tools and brushes for you to use. You have more than twelve hard-edged and soft edged brushes to play with. You also have a variety of different brushes, including a star, spatter, air brush, spatter shaped and natural brushes.
