Home Surveillance Systems: Skylink Is Just An Alarm

Everybody’s concerned with security these days, and it’s no wonder. We’re living day to day bogged down with reports of crime from news outlets online, on TV, on the radio, and in print. With all the insanity in the Outside World, it can be reassuring to set up one of the many home surveillance systems available today.

For home use, all you technically need is a really loud siren, something with enough noise to wake you up in the middle of the night and let your neighbors know you need help. For businesses, it’s a different matter: a siren won’t help, since all the other businesses will be closed, too.

Skylink declares their SC-100 model to be perfect for home and business, but from what I’ve seen it’s not reliable enough to be anything more than one of many home surveillance systems.

But does the Skylink SC-100 measure up to other home surveillance systems? If we dig a little deeper, we can come up with a conclusion.

Easy Installation, Simplicity of Use

Let’s face it: if you’re looking at good home surveillance systems, the first thing you’re going to notice is that they don’t come cheap. For the most part, they’re in excess of $200 and may require professional assistance to install. The Skylink’s key attraction is its price: at only $115, you’re simply not going to find anything comparable. It’s simple to install: essentially all you’re doing is slapping a few motion sensors on windows and doors. If movement is detected by these sensors, a 120 decibel alarm will sound.

Skylink’s “rolling code” feature keeps down the instances of false alarms, but doesn’t always work. A passing car could still set off the alarm and freak you out at night.

Easily Breakable, Hard To Place

There are also some major setbacks in the Skylink SC-100. The first, and probably worst, is that an alarm is all you’ll get when you buy this product. You have to enter a passcode to open your doors and windows without setting off the alarms, which can lead to accidental triggerings and, in time, some very annoyed neighbors who are tired of listening to your alarm’s bumbling.

Then there’s the system’s overall weak build. They’re easy to locate, and as loud as the alarm is, it won’t do you any good if the intruder bashes it first. They’re easy to remove from the wall. There are simply too many ways it can be disabled or taken out without your ever knowing about it.

My Opinion: Get More For Your Money

Low prices usually equal low quality, and this product is no exception. An alarm just by itself usually won’t deter the more determined intruders, especially if they are cunning enough to disable your alarm. In other words, don’t just get the Skylink. As one part of a bigger system, it could be useful.

If you’re looking to protect your family, then honestly why not pick up another of the many home surveillance systems out there that may be more expensive, but at least have the features to do the job right?
